What is your role at your organisation and how do you support practitioners /or the industry?

Director of the company with a focus on general management and R&D. Support the industry via research and development of modern pharmaceutical grade formulations of herbals preparations based on Ayurvedic science. Additionally, support and provide education on Ayurvedic treatments.

How did you get into your area of expertise, and why do you stay?

We have a number of pharmacists, besides myself, in the organization, and we are passionate about bringing the Ayurvedic health management science to improve the health outcomes of people. We have always been interested in complementary healthcare and Ayurveda offers another option as a health solution.

What has been the main focus or outcomes of your research/work over the past year?

Focus has been on researching the combination and forms of herbs that would offer the highest therapeutic efficacy, formulations that have good bioavailability and generation of clinical evidence for the product indications. Additionally, now working on developing educational materials for practitioners.

How has your field changed in the past five years?

Increasing acceptance of complementary healthcare by the general public, including Ayurvedic treatments. Also increasing focus by the regulatory authorities such as TGA on maintaining quality and safety standards, with updates to guidelines on herbs used and what indications can be claimed supported by evidence.

Emerging new areas are the increase in clinical trial activity of herbal preparations, development of proprietary ingredients with clinical data, and management of mental health issues.

What do you predict will happen in the next 5 to 10 years in your brand’s particular field(s) of expertise?

Ayurvedic treatments will continue to increase in scope, as well as a broader range of TGA-listed products. There will be an increase in educational materials and platforms for both practitioners and patients/consumers.

Proprietary ingredients will become more specialized with strong clinical data. Novel formulations to address bioavailability issues.

A plethora of robust clinical evidence, leading to increasing use of such complementary medicines alongside modern medicines.

What is the one-way you believe natural medicine practitioners, can make a difference for their clients?

Focussing more on underlying causes of the condition and accessing the appropriate herbs to manage the underlying cause.
