Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a remedial, hands-on technique based on the use of gentle pressure and release of the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. This involves a sequence of light, cross-fibre movements of varying pressure at specific sites on the body using thumbs and fingers in a specific manner. There are also specific timings applied between some of the moves when the therapist is required to wait for a number of minutes.

It is believed this technique promotes the body’s own healing response. There is no manipulation or adjustment of bones and no forceful movements used. The experience of a treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing. It is believed that Bowen Therapy prompts the body to reset, repair and balance itself. Clients report the experience as relief of pain, improvement in function and recovery of energy.

The Bowen technique is a wholistic approach to pain belief and healing. Tom Bowen developed this technique when working as a therapist at his clinic and also as a massage therapist for football clubs in Geelong. From his observations he surmised that dysfunction of the fascia was the underlying cause of many musculoskeletal, neurological and neuromuscular problems and devised a method to treat these problems.
